SysAdmin Day

Happy SysAdmin day!

A big thanks to all system administrators - you keep the world running.

The last Friday in July marks the 10th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day.

It is an international day that aims to highlight the issues faced by system administrators and provide an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for all those late nights fighting malware, blackouts and internet outages.

A sysadmin is a professional, who plans, worries, hacks, fixes, pushes, advocates, protects and creates good computer networks, to get you your data, to help you do work -- to bring the potential of computing ever closer to reality.

You can also keep track of the thank you messages and add your own on Twitter using the #sysadminday hash tag.

Better World Books

BusinessWeek readers nominated Better World Books one of the most promising social entrepreneurs in the country.

The company was founded by Xavier Helgesen and his partners, Kreece Fuchs and Jeff Kurtzman. "We just thought, like, wow, there are all these books out there that the bookstores are just saying, 'No, I don't want it,' but there's totally value in those books," Helgesen said.

From their site: "Better World Books offers a no cost program to help you manage your discarded and donated books. We make the most of your books by selling them on over 18 online-marketplaces and sharing the proceeds with you and one of our nonprofit literacy programs.

"Better World Books donates 5 to 10 percent of its revenue back into the hands of libraries and literacy programs around the world.
